Are we from Clare?

The Irish seaside resort Kilkee in county Clare is often compared with Kilkie and the assumption drawn that the family name is derived from the town name.

Although Kilkee is a very nice town with a lovely beach, there is no known connection between the town and the family. The town of Kilkee was originally called Cilkee and this has a different linguistic origin than Kilkie/Gilkie. Also it would be unlikely that no one with the name Kilkee exists or that there are no records of Kilkie/Gilkie anywhere near county Clare, only near Derry.

Are we Polish?

Another common search result found when looking for Kilkie connections is the name Kilkiewicz. People retrieved with this surname have always been recorded as Polish origin. So, the leading question? is Kilkiewicz a Polish person who came from Derry, or did Kilkie come from some lost Polish sailors beached in Northern Ireland?

Kilkie oddities

Isn't Google wonderful! One of the first thing anyone does when beginning any research is to run the terms to be researched through Google. A search for Kilkie throws up a whole range of family members, some famous, some not. No criminals (so far).

However in addition to the family individuals several other unusual Kilkie records are found. We looked them up to see the family connection.
